The Rajasthan Royals are set to enter a new chapter in their journey as 17-year-old prodigy-turned-leader Riyan Parag takes over the captaincy for the Indian Premier League 2026 season. Having joined the franchise as a teenager in 2019, Parag’s rise reflects both his personal growth and the team’s trust in his leadership potential.
Parag steps into a role previously held by some of cricket’s most respected figures, including Shane Warne, Rahul Dravid, Shane Watson, Steven Smith, and most recently Sanju Samson. With Samson moving to the Chennai Super Kings, the Royals now face the challenge of rebuilding without their long-time captain and most capped player.
Speaking ahead of the new season in Jaipur, Parag acknowledged the void left by Samson, calling him “irreplaceable.” He compared the situation to losing stalwarts like Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma, emphasizing that while individual brilliance cannot be replicated, the team must adapt collectively.
“We can only try to find players with similar skills to fill the gap in the batting order,” Parag said. “But more importantly, we are focusing on building something new and stronger as a unit.”
The Royals’ disappointing ninth-place finish in the 2025 season still lingers in memory. A series of narrow defeats, including multiple last-ball losses, derailed what could have been a far more successful campaign. Parag believes the difference between failure and success this year lies in capitalizing on crucial moments.
“In any match, there are key situations where decisions matter the most—whether it’s the batting order or calls at the toss,” he explained. “If we can make the right decisions in those moments, the results will follow.”
A major point of excitement for the Royals this season is the return of Ravindra Jadeja, who was part of the franchise during the early years of the IPL and now rejoins as part of the trade involving Samson. Parag believes Jadeja’s experience will be invaluable, especially for a relatively young squad.
“The game has evolved since Jadeja first played for RR, so that alone doesn’t give us an advantage,” Parag noted. “But his experience across so many seasons is what sets him apart. He understands pressure situations and can guide the team in those defining moments.”
Jadeja is expected to play a key role in the Royals’ bowling strategy, particularly alongside leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi. With home conditions in Jaipur and Guwahati typically favoring slower bowlers, Parag is optimistic about their impact.
“Having both Jadeja and Bishnoi gives us a world-class spin combination,” he said. “On surfaces that assist spin, they can control the game and even turn it around from difficult situations.”
As the Royals prepare for IPL 2026, the spotlight will firmly be on Parag—not just as a batter, but as a leader tasked with guiding a transitioning team. While the absence of Samson presents a significant challenge, it also offers an opportunity for new leadership and fresh strategies.
